Steam-Shed Brewing

Born from a love of good beer, great pubs, and making ‘stuff’, Paul set up Steam-Shed Brewing in The Old Train Shed, Swaffham in 2019, having been an avid home brewer since the early 90’s.

Installing and commissioning all the equipment himself, and upgrading to larger capacity equipment at the end of 2022, there’s been a gradual transition from the long term ‘day job’ of restoring and servicing air-cooled VW’s, to developing and growing the Brewery.

Producing small batch, handcrafted traditional and modern beers, seasonally changing and backed with a few key lines. All beers (except our sweet stout, are vegan/vegetarian friendly, but they are still super clear as we use a vegan friendly beer clarification.

The majority of each brew is casked (Firkins and Pins) for the bars of pubs, clubs and events, with a proportion usually being bottled, and some put into mini kegs.

It’s a family affair with Jayne (Paul’s wife) supporting in the brewery and sorting the accounts; daughters, Ellah & Abria, involved in brewing and bottling and Bonnie (Paul’s sister), looking after the marketing/comms side.

Previous Swaffham Brewers:

Morse & Woods, White Hart Lane 1809-1895 when it was sold with 51 tied houses and the Swaffham maltings.  Also had a brewery and maltings at Lowestoft.

Purchased by Steward & Patterson Ltd in 1895 who experienced trading losses over the next 30 years. This prompted the sale of 10 pubs and the premises closed in 1936 after, it is believed, spending the intervening 11 years producing bottled aerated water and brewing Ginger Beer.

This was the end of a business which had, for around 135 years, been central to the life and recreational activities of the people of Swaffham.  However, the maltings continued to function and produced malt for breweries elsewhere.Â
